Catching Up With Stockard Channing…

… and Matthew Risch. Catching up with Martha Plimpton recently made me think about other Pal Joey cast members, and what they might be up to these days. Stockard Channing At The Westport Country Playhouse


Ticket Sales Reported Brisk for “The Breath of Life”

Oscar-nominated Stockard Channing (l) and four times Oscar-nominated Jane Alexander are attracting “brisk ticket sales” at the Westport Country Playhouse for its latest production, “The Breath of Life,” which has its opening night performance on Saturday. Public Relations Manager Patricia Blaufuss said that tickets are selling “extremely well” and while no show is completely sold out, some performances have only seats remaining with a limited view. The show runs through Oct. 17.

A Taste Of The Tony’s

The Tony Awards show on Sunday night was spectacular! And although Pal Joey didn’t come away with any awards, the show was well represented….from Martha Plimpton on the red carpet (at time code 1:15)…

….to Stockard Channing “bewitching” in the opening number (she appears at 4:55 in this video), alongside Aaron Tveit of Next to Normal.

And the finale was just too funny to miss! Neil Patrick Harris did a fabulous job as Tony host.

Stockard Channing to Perform on Tony Awards

Representatives for the Tony Awards announced Tuesday that Stockard Channing, of “Pal Joey”, is among the scheduled performers for Sunday night’s Tony Awards show. The following performers have also been added to Sunday’s awards ceremony: Dolly Parton along with the cast of “9 to 5: The Musical”; Elton John with the cast of “Billy Elliot, The Musical”; Liza Minnelli; and the band Poison along with the cast of “Rock of Ages.”

The roster of performers features the casts of the Tony nominees for best musical and best musical revival, which also includes “Guys and Dolls,” “Hair,” “Next to Normal,” “Shrek the Musical” and “West Side Story.” The Tonys show will be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and broadcast on CBS.

Four TONY Nominations for Pal Joey!

The American Theatre Wing announced the 2009 Tony Award Nominees today, with Roundabout Theatre Company’s Pal Joey picking up a respectable FOUR:

Best Revival of a Musical
Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical; Stockard Channing
Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical; Martha Plimpton
Best Scenic Design of a Musical; Scott Pask

The American Theatre Wing announced the 2009 Tony Award Nominees today. While Billy Elliott and Next to Normal topped the list of multiple nominations by show (15 and 11 respectively), Roundabout Theatre Company’s Pal Joey picked up a respectable 4 Tony nods:

Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical; Stockard Channing
Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical; Martha Plimpton
Best Scenic Design of a Musical; Scott Pask

Pal Joey Hits It Big With Award Nominations

The Drama Desk Awards nominations were announced on April 27 at the New York Friars Club, with Pal Joey garnering three nominations:

Outstanding Revival of a Musical
Outstanding Actress in a Musical: Stockard Channing
and Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical: Martha Plimpton

The Drama Desk, an organization of professional theater critics, writers and editors, bestows awards with Broadway, off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway productions competing in the same categories. The ceremony will be held on May 17 at F.H. LaGuardia Concert Hall at Lincoln Center, hosted by Harvey Fierstein.

Also, the Outer Critics CircleAwards nominations were announced on April 20 at the Algonquin Hotel, with Pal Joey being nominated for two awards:

Outstanding Revival of a Musical (Broadway or Off-Broadway)
Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical: Martha Plimpton

Outer Critics Circle Awards are bestowed by an association whose members are affiliated with more than 90 publications and broadcasting outlets. Winners will be announced on May 11, and the 2009 awards ceremony will be held on May 21 at Sardi’s.

Stockard Channing Featured In “Broadway For A New America”

Stockard Channing isn’t taking even one day of rest following Sunday’s final curtain of her current Broadway show Pal Joey. According to the Independent Press, Ms. Channing will be appearing in the “Broadway For A New America” benefit on Monday, March 2.

April 2nd UPDATE: STOCKARD CHANNING IS NO LONGER APPEARING IN THIS SHOW.

The concert will be hosted by Broadway star Jim Dale, and features Tony, Emmy and Oscar nominated performers Stockard Channing, Rosie Perez, Fran Drescher, Anne Meara, Lillias White, Melissa Errico and Tovah Feldshuh.

Other notables included in the benefit are current Broadway singers Rebeca Luker of “Mary Poppins”, Norm Lewis and Jonathan Freeman of “the Little Mermaid”, and Krysta Rodriguez of “In the Heights”; funny-man Richard Belzer; and three-time Emmy nominee Seth Rudetsky.

A star-studded lineup has been announced for The Jewish Alliance for Change’s forthcoming benefit concert, Broadway for a New America: Standing Up for Marriage Equality and a Progressive Agenda for Change, which will play the Peter Norton Symphony Space on March 2. Tony Award winner Jim Dale will host the event, directed by Sara Louise Lazarus with musical direction by Lawrence Yurman.

Among those scheduled to appear are Stockard Channing, Scott Blakeman, Richard Belzer, Tovah Feldshuh, Jonathan Freeman, Mario Frangoulis, Marni Nixon and Seth Rudetsky. Speakers at the event will include Garden State Equality chairman Steven Goldenstein, Rabbis J. Rolando Matalon and Marcelo Bronstein and Evan Wolfson, executive director of Freedom to Marry.

The Jewish Alliance for Change is an organization founded to mobilize the American public to fight for marriage equality and a progressive agenda for change. All proceeds from the evening will go to the Alliance’s continued efforts in support of progressive issues.

The concert will be produced by Kati Meister and Scott Denny.
